I’ve held my heart for ransom
for a price you could not pay to me
as I rose to fly my fears
held me down like gravity
I felt my best intentions
crushed beneath my feet
like a crown I’ve worn my scars
for everyone to see
when I tried to say I love you
a thousand times a day
my weakness and pride were two separate wings
on the same bird of prey

from My Father’s Son by Billy Cerveny

Mumford and Come Thou Fount

This is one of my favorite songs ever by one of my favorite songwriters ever. It also has one of my favorite lyrics ever.

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

Revelation 21:4-5

The only thing that’s good in me is Jesus.

The Only Thing, Ronnie Freeman

I can see a light that is coming
For the heart that holds on
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
Still I will praise You.

You Never Let Go, Matt Redman

One of my friends showed me this cover of my favorite Civil Wars song, Poison and Wine, today.  This girl changed the lyrics a little, instead of it being a dialogue between a guy and girl this cover is about God.  Videos kinda weird, but the songs cool.

By the way, have you ever seen what David Crowder looks like? He’s one of the coolest looking dudes ever.

Pop Christian music has come a long way since this…

Sandra McCracken (w/ Derek Webb) - Come Thou Long Expected Jesus

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

The Advent season is already upon us. Exactly 21 days from today we will celebrate the “coming” of our King.  One of my favorite Christmas songs is Come Thou Long Expected Jesus, about Israel’s longing for a Savior.  Isaiah 6:7, written hundreds of years before Jesus was born, reads…

For to us a child is born,

to us a song is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and peace

there will be no end.

He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom,

establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness

from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

I think it’s important to remember Israel’s waiting.  Remembering the waiting makes the celebration of the coming full of more gratitude.  And not only that, but also because we are waiting once again.  Waiting for him to come again and save us this time from our sorrows.

He will wipe every tear from their eyes.  There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.

Rev 21:4

The word “advent” comes from a Latin word that means “arrival” or “coming.”  So let the words of this old Christmas hymn help prepare your heart for this advent season.

Come Thou long-expected Jesus

Born to set Thy people free;

From our fears and sins release us,

Let us find our rest in Thee.

Israel’s strength and consolation,

Hope of all the saints Thou art;

Dear desire of every nation,

Joy of every longing heart.

Born Thy people to deliver,

Born a child and yet a King,

Born to reign in us forever,

Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.

By Thine own eternal Spirit

Rule in all our hearts alone;

By Thine all sufficient merit,

Raise us to Thy glorious throne.
